KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN’S RESPONSES TO TELEVISION CARTOON HUMOR

Abstract:

The relationship between the perceived humorous content and the perceived aggressive or violent content of television cartoons was studied. Thirty kindergarten subjects made judgements  about the humor appeal of ten cartoon film segments, while ten adult subjects judged the same film segments on their aggressive or violent content. The results showed support for the hypotheses that the material in television cartoons judged by adults to be aggressive or violent in nature is the same material children find to be funny.  Implications for television programming are discussed.
